Liberal Calls for Gun Control Will Backfire and Increase Gun Sales

This weekend, the United States suffered two terrible tragedies.

On Friday, a gunman entered an immigration office in Binghampton, NY killing 12 before he turned the gun on himself.

Then on Saturday, 3 police officers were killed in apparent ambush while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Pittsburgh.

This weekend's shootings were horrific events in the course of the life of our nation. They show us that there are people who would wish ill upon others, and we all mourn for those who lost their lives.

But these events will be sufficiently politicized, and gun control advocates will undoubtedly push for tighter gun restrictions.

Oh wait, they already are. Immediately, liberals on twitter were buzzing with calls to ban guns, assault weapons, etc. etc. etc.

Here's the sad little secret for all you liberals out there: These shootings will not result in fewer guns in the hands of citizens, but more guns in the hands of citizens.

Here's the other secret liberals don't get: It's their fault more guns will be sold.

Allow me to illustrate with a case study concerning 3 events:

September 11, 2001
The obvious one is, of course, the September 11th attacks. Gun sales were actually down during 2001 until terrorists attacked the United States. Remember how afraid everyone was? We didn't know what was coming next. Fear surged through the country and people bought guns. Gun sales showed a significant increase of 9-22% after the 9/11 attacks.

Lesson: Security fears increase gun sales. (duh.)

Clinton Passes Brady Bill
After the passage of the Brady Bill, a relatively benign bill that mandated a 5-day waiting period to purchase firearms, gun stores saw a massive influx of first-time gun buyers. The demand was such that some gun manufacturers were having trouble producing enough guns. The bill was passed in November 1993, but wouldn't go into effect until February 1994. The gun sales surged during the intervening months in an effort to "beat the deadline."

Lesson: Passing a small restriction in the gun law will increase sales.

Obama is Elected

In the days after Obama was elected in 2008, gun sales shot up 49% over sales during the same period one year earlier. The purchases were largely driven by Obama's stated plan to restrict some gun sales and ban assault rifles. AR-15's and M-16's (both assault rifles) were in such demand that stores had trouble keeping them in stock.

Lesson: Even mentioning plans to change the gun law will increase sales.

I hate to give liberals tips on how to hone their message, but it's also kind of hilarious.
  • Terrible shooting happens - Gun sales increase
  • Liberal response to shooting event is tighter gun restrictions - gun sales increase
  • Liberal politicians pass new legislation in response to shooting event and liberal pressure - gun sales increase
Lesson: Liberals are responsible for millions of new guns in the hands of United States citizens.

So by their own logic, liberals are also responsible for more shootings... right?
